What to Expect After Hemorrhoidectomy

Pain:

  • As discussed pre-op pain can be severe in the first few days post-op

  • Take pain medications as prescribed

  • Severe pain may persist for a few days and up to 7 days

  • Pain should then gradually decrease but some degree of discomfort may persist for a few weeks

Bleeding:

  • Some bleeding in the first few days is normal

  • This will be minor low volume bleeds, usually at time of bowel movements

  • Some spotting may persist for a couple of weeks

  • Severe high volume bleeding is not normal and needs urgent attention

Bowel movements:

  • Take bowel protocol medications as prescribed to ensure 1-2 soft bowel movements per day

  • There should be no straining

  • There should be no excessive time spent on the commode

Call our clinic if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • Severe high volume bleeding that doesn’t stop

  • Severe pain despite taking pain medications as prescribed

  • Fever / chills

  • Acute onset abdominal or pelvic pain

  • Inability to pass urine

Refer to the Emergency department if:

  • Chest pain / shortness of breath

  • Any of the above unusual symptoms if you are not able to get a hold of our clinic

  • Any other acute / urgent complaints
